Hypnotherapy to quit smoking & vaping: Rockville, MD & online across Maryland

You already know why to quit. Hypnotherapy works on the part that keeps reaching anyway.

Willpower argues with a habit. Hypnotherapy changes the habit's wiring: the automatic reach, the cue, the identity of being a smoker. I've spent over twenty years doing this work, with hundreds of smoking-cessation clients, including people who quit habits they'd carried for decades.

Why quitting is hard

The habit doesn't live where the arguments happen.

If quitting were a matter of information, you'd have quit years ago. Smoking and vaping persist because they're not decisions. They're automatic sequences, learned deeply and rehearsed thousands of times: coffee, cigarette. Car, cigarette. Stress, vape. The conscious mind decides to quit; the automatic mind keeps executing the old program, especially under stress.

Hypnosis is a state of focused, absorbed attention in which that automatic layer becomes easier to work with directly. In session, we do not just suggest "do not smoke." We work on the cues that trigger the reach, what the habit has been doing for you, such as providing a pause, an exhale, or permission to step away, and how to meet those needs without nicotine. And we work on identity: the shift from "smoker who's trying to quit" to "someone who doesn't smoke."

What we work on

The automatic reach: interrupting the cue-to-cigarette sequence where it actually runs

What smoking or vaping has been doing for you, and honest replacements for each job

Stress, so quitting doesn't just relocate the pressure

Identity: becoming a non-smoker, not a deprived smoker

Self-hypnosis skills you keep, for cravings and for life after them

Sessions run 60โ€“90 minutes, usually as a short series of three or more, in person in Rockville or by video anywhere in Maryland. Vaping and smokeless nicotine follow the same approach: the cues differ (a vape is always in your pocket), so the plan does too.

Why work with me on this

Smoking cessation isn't something I dabble in. It's a specialty I built a career on.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I co-founded the Washington DC Hypnosis Center and conducted more than 6,200 hours of hypnosis and coaching sessions, including hundreds of smoking-cessation and weight-management clients. Some quit habits they'd maintained for decades. I've trained over a hundred practitioners in these methods, presented for several consecutive years at the National Guild of Hypnotists conference, and was invited to the National Institutes of Health to present on hypnosis and self-hypnosis.

Now, as a Licensed Graduate Professional Counselor, I bring something most hypnotists cannot: when quitting stirs up what nicotine was quieting, such as anxiety, stress, or old patterns, we can work with that too, in the same room, with clinical training behind it.

From smoking-cessation clients

"After 4 months, I have not smoked at all. It is like there is some sort of switch that has been flipped since my first session."

E.G.: Smoking cessation

"I was amazed and blown away by how much time he spent talking to me, trying to get to the bottom of the problem before hypnotizing me."

D.M.: Smoking, bruxism & stress

Reflections from hypnotherapy clients, shared with permission. Initials only, to protect privacy. Individual results vary, and I'll tell you honestly what to expect for your situation.

Common questions

About quitting with hypnotherapy

Does hypnosis for smoking actually work?+

Honestly: for many people, yes, and I won't promise it works for everyone, because nothing does. The research on hypnosis for smoking cessation is promising but mixed, which is typical for an intervention that varies enormously with how it's practiced. What I can offer is a version of this work refined across hundreds of cessation clients over two decades, individualized to your pattern rather than a script, and a straight answer in the consultation about whether your situation is a good fit.

How many sessions does quitting take?+

Typically a short series of three or more 60โ€“90 minute sessions. Some people experience a dramatic shift early; one client described it as a switch being flipped in the first session. The remaining sessions consolidate the change and prepare you for situations that used to trigger the habit. I'd rather set up a quit that holds than sell you a single-session miracle.

Does it work for vaping too?+

Yes. The underlying mechanics are the same: cues, automatic reaching, stress relief, identity. Vaping adds its own wrinkles: it's always in your pocket, there's no natural stopping point like a finished cigarette, and it's often woven into indoor routines smoking never touched. The approach adapts to those differences. The same applies to pouches and other smokeless nicotine.

What if I'm skeptical about hypnosis?+

Skeptics do fine. Hypnosis isn't belief or gullibility. It's focused attention, a state you already enter absorbed in a movie or in the moments before sleep. You stay aware and in control throughout; nothing is done to you. Analytical minds often make excellent hypnotic subjects once the process is matched to how they think, which is part of what an experienced practitioner does.

Can I combine this with patches, gum, or medication?+

Yes. Hypnotherapy addresses the behavioral and psychological side of the habit; nicotine replacement and prescription medications address the physiological side, in consultation with your physician. They're complementary, not competing, and for heavier, longer-term habits, combining approaches is often the smart play.

Will I just replace smoking with eating?+

This is exactly why we work on what the habit was doing for you, not just the habit. If smoking was your stress valve and we remove it without building a replacement, something else takes the job, often food. So stress regulation and replacement strategies are built into the work from the start. It's also why I've worked with weight management for as long as I've worked with smoking; the two are close cousins.

Every smoker has a last cigarette eventually. You get to choose yours.
